Whole-House Air Purifiers
Whole-house air purifiers are designed to be installed directly into your home’s central heating and cooling (HVAC) system. As the fan on your HVAC system runs, the air throughout the house is drawn into and filtered through a state-of-the-art purification system, and then delivered via your existing ductwork to every room of your home.
Note that choosing the correct whole-home air purifier for the size of your house is extremely important for proper air cleaning. In addition, different whole-house purification systems are designed to handle different indoor contaminants (e.g., particles, chemicals/gases, airborne microbes), so it is important to choose the right unit for your needs. Also, keep in mind that most central air purification systems need to be professionally installed by a certified contractor or heating and cooling company.
The final thing to consider is that most whole-house air purifiers operate on a bypass basis, filtering up to 30% of the air being returned to the furnace by the HVAC system. The inline Blueair Central and IQAir Perfect 16 are exceptions, filtering particles from 100% of the circulated air. That being said, bypass systems such as the Epurair MA-1C, AllerAir 6000 AH Exec and the Electrocorp 9475 AH and 9975 AH offer the advantage of being able to adsorb chemical fumes, toxic gases, unpleasant odours (and depending on the model, airborne micro-organisms), in addition to providing effective particle filtration.
