Air Purifiers for Wood Smoke

Why You Need an Air Purifier
With the high cost of fuel, Canadian home-owners are increasingly turning to wood heating systems as a primary or secondary source of heat, while others simply enjoy the warmth and ambience of a glowing fire. However, wood smoke contains over 100 pollutants that can compromise indoor air quality and cause health problems, even at relatively low levels. Although most wood smoke is vented outside, it can still enter your house when you open the stove to add wood, through leaks and cracks in the stove, from chimneys that are not properly maintained, through back-drafting or by seepage from outside.
Wood smoke pollutants include both solid and liquid particles that can travel deep into the lungs, contributing to everything from asthma to heart disease. In addition to particulate matter, wood smoke emissions contain harmful gases and suspected carcinogens such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, formaldehyde and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as well as numerous other potentially hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
FACT: The EPA estimates that in one hour, a single fireplace burning 10 pounds of wood generates 4,300 times more PAHs than 30 cigarettes do
Even if you do not use a fireplace or woodstove in your home, you could be at risk if you live in a community where wood heating is common (e.g., northern or rural areas). The particulate matter contained in wood smoke is so small that it can easily penetrate windows and doors – even newer, energy-efficient, weather-sealed homes are unable to keep it out. A recent study by the University of Washington in Seattle showed that indoor levels of wood smoke particulates can reach 50% to 70% of outdoor levels in homes that do not burn wood themselves.
FACT: Wood smoke is chemically active in the body 40 times longer than tobacco smoke
While the public is still largely unaware of the health issues associated with inhaling wood smoke, it seems likely that the romantic attachment to wood-burning fireplaces and the attractiveness of woodstoves as a cost savings measure could quickly fade once awareness of these issues increases.
