Air Purifiers for Asthma or Allergies

Why You Need an Air Purifier
Despite a better understanding of the disease, asthma has been increasing in all age groups, but especially among children who live in urban areas. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), increased exposure to indoor pollutants and environmental allergens is one of the key reasons for this. The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) agrees. It reports that, over the last decade, asthma has grown at a much higher rate for women (82%) than for men (29%), a phenomenon that it attributes to women’s greater exposure to household chemicals.
Health Canada Fact: There has been a threefold increase in asthmatic deaths in Canada
over the last 20 years, mostly in teenagers and young adults
Allergies have also been on the rise over the last few decades, although researchers are at a loss as to why this is happening. Allergies are most commonly experienced during childhood, and according to Statistics Canada, 1 out of every 3 elementary school students in Canada suffers from allergies of one kind or another. The most common airborne allergens are pollen, mould, animal dander and dust, although allergy symptoms can be aggravated by many other things, including airborne chemicals from cleaning products, cooking odours, cigarette smoke and fragrances.
Health Canada Fact: People who develop one allergy are more likely to
develop other allergies
While there is no “cure” for asthma or allergies, symptoms have been found to improve when patients avoid the allergens to which they are allergic. The AAAAI advocates avoiding environmental allergens, including the reduction of allergens inside the home, as one of four primary goals of good asthma and allergy management. This would include decreasing humidity in the house to reduce dust mites and mould, replacing carpets with hardwood, using dust mite covers on bedding and vacuuming frequently with a HEPA filter vacuum.
HEPA air purifiers can be used as one component of a full program to help reduce allergens in the home. Among the associations and organizations that recommend the use of HEPA air purifiers as part of a complete allergen management program are:
- The Mayo Clinic
- The Canadian Lung Association
- The American Lung Association
- The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology
- The Allergy/Asthma Information Association
In addition, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently listed some air purifiers as medical devices, allowing allergists and other physicians to prescribe them to patients.
